Hola amigos,

In Windows, just set up a Spanish Keyboard layout.

�� replaces the ;: key (they move to above the , and .) and the quote key becomes the accent key � �

to use an accent, hit the accent key and then a vowel and the vowel will be accented.
�� or � etc...

If you hit any other key say a consonant like t or a space, the accent will appear and then the consonant or space.

�� are also available.

To switch languages or keyboards from the taskbar
Open Regional and Language Options in Control Panel.
On the Languages tab, under Text services and input languages, click Details.
Under Preferences, click Language Bar.
In the Language Bar Settings dialog box, select the Show additional Language bar icons in the Notification area check box.
Click OK three times.
Click the language icon or the keyboard icon on the taskbar to display a menu.
Click a language or keyboard.
Notes

To open Regional and Language Options, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Regional and Language Options.
The language icon is available only if you have added multiple languages or multiple keyboard layouts in Regional and Language Options in Control Panel.
When inserting text, you can use the keyboard, speech recognition, or handwriting recognition interchangeably without clicking a button.
The letters on the taskbar icon represent the active language. For example, EN stands for English, ES stands for espa�ol, SV stands for Svenska..
If you are using a tablet computer, you can use Tablet PC Input Panel for handwriting and speech tasks. For more information about Input Panel, click Related Topics.

I think there's a lot of truth in the saying "It's better to give than to receive."

The saying in Spanish is "Hay mas felicidad en dar que en recibir. " (literally: There's more happiness in giving than in receiving.) or "Es mejor dar que recibir" or "M�s vale dar que recibir." (literally It's worth more to give than to receive.")

Hola amigos,

Several people have asked us how to type the accents on a computer.

This is how I type them on a Windows computer. If others have suggestions for other platforms, please share them.

Hold down the alt key and type the number on the number keypad. However, these key sequences don't work on most laptops.

� 168
� 0161

I keep this cheat sheet taped to my computer.

In Word and other word processing programs, you can press these two keys at the same time: Ctrl and single quotes and then release them and type the letter that you want accented such as a.

I recreated the pdf file and overwrote the file in:

I'm able to open it in Safari version 3.1.2 running on Windows.

Will you try again to see if you can open it?

If not, it may be a problem with Preview?

Hola Sam,

We recently camped and a friend brought his guitar. We start singing a song only to get stuck since we couldn't remember all of the lyrics. Interestingly, if someone sung the wrong lyrics, we could recognize that they were wrong but we couldn't come up with the right words.

As you know, it's much easier to practice Spanish comprehension because we can listen to Spanish frequently. It's harder to have the opportunity to practice it -- that's why we're trying to connect our listeners to study buddies. Even if you mostly practice via email, you're practicing writing phrases in Spanish and you're having to think in Spanish.

Thank you for your suggestion to create a podcast on common phrases used in the household with children. We're currently creating a series of podcasts on the subjunctive. After that we'll be covering the command form and we'll cover common phrases used in the household with children and common phrases used by teachers with students.

These podcasts will teach you phrases that you can use on a daily basis. You can expand them by changing the object. After you're saying "Pongo la camisa." then add "Pongo los calcetines." or "Pongo la jaqueta."

You can pause your device while you practice repeating the phrases. Try adding 3-5 new phrases a day while continuing to practice the phrases from the previous days. At the end of a month, you'll be surprised about how much more Spanish you're using on a daily basis.

You and your children might also want to have fun labelling your household items in Spanish. Then you can practice a phrase for each item such as "Juanito est� sentado en el sofa."

Did you know that there are five Spanish verbs that have a different meaning in the imperfect than in the preterit?

While recording our bonus podcast about the imperfect and the preterit Rosa taught me that there are five verbs that have a different meaning in the imperfect and in the preterit. Some of these examples are from the beautiful song, Hasta que Te Conoc�, which you can view on our Videos page: http://www.edufone.com/Videos.php

1. saber - imperfect - �to know (something)� preterit � to find out/to learn.

Examples:
imperfect: No sab�a de tristezas. - I didn't know about sadness.
No sab�a tu nombre. � I didn�t know your name.
preterit: I found out the truth yesterday - Supe la verdad ayer.
Cuando supe tu nombre, te reconoc�. - When I found out/learned your name, I recognized you.

2. conocer � imperfect � �to know (someone)� preterit � �to meet someone�

Examples:
imperfect: Conoc�a a Maria. � I used to know Maria.
preterit: Hasta que te conoc�, vi la vida con dolor. - Once I met you, I saw life as painful.

3. querer - imperfect - �to want� preterit � to try.
no querer - imperfect - �didn�t want to� preterit � to refuse.

Examples:
imperfect: Ella quer�a ir a la fiesta. � She wanted to go to the party.
Ella no quer�a ir a la fiesta. � She didn�t want to go to the party.
preterit: Quis� hacerlo pero no pude. � I tried to do it but I failed.
Ella no quiso ir a la fiesta. � She refused to go to the party.

4. poder � imperfect: �was able to (was capable of)� preterit: managed to / succeeded
no poder - imperfect - �wasn�t able to (wasn�t capable of)� preterit � failed to.

Examples:
imperfect: No pod�a ir a la fiesta. � I couldn�t go to the party.
preterit: Los piratas no pudieron abrir el archivo. � The hackers didn�t succeed in opening the file.

5. tener � imperfect: used to have preterit: received

Examples:
imperfect: Ten�a un carro azul. � I used to have a blue car.
preterit: Tuve una carta de mi abuela. � I received a card from my grandma.
